The Wheat Ridge Fire Department (WRFD) has developed two firefighting programs for new members: an Entry-Level Firefighter Program, and a Fast Track Program.
Entry-Level Firefighter Program:
This program is developed for new members looking to become firefighters. WRFD will provide all of the initial training for these recruits. WRFD will put recruits through a state-certified Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations, and First Responder. This program is conducted over a 6 month period. Upon completion of academy classes, the recruit is promoted to Probationary Firefighter.
Fast Track Program:
This program is developed for new members looking to join the WRFD that currently have State of Colorado certifications. To apply for this program each applicant must have a current State of Colorado: Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations, and EMT-B. The Fast Track Academy is conducted over a 4-5 week period. Within the Fast Track Academy each recruit will be orientated to all WRFD procedures, equipment, and expectations. Upon completion of the Fast Track Academy, the recruit is promoted to Probationary Firefighter.
Requirements to become a WRFD Firefighter:
-A minimum of 18 years of age
-High School diploma or General Education Development (GED)
- Valid Colorado Divers’ License
- Complete Interest Card (left-hand side of the website)
- Successful completion of the WRFD candidate screening process
- Civil service written examination (Waived for Fast Track Program)
- Job orientated physical agility exam
- Oral board interview
- Complete background check and medical examination
- Must conduct a minimum of 48 hours of shift work per month
- Must meet all training requirements
- Must adhere to all WRFD policies and procedures

Once the Training Division opens the application process, they will use the information provided on the interest card to contact you.
